5 Skincare Mistakes Sephora Kids Are Making That Give Us the Ick 👀

Let's face it, these days nearly all of us get our beauty advice from social media. Whether it be how to sequence your skincare products or the best ceramide cream to protect your skin barrier, there is a lot of information and misinformation from beauty influencers. I am here to clear the air on five beauty blunders that need to RIP in 2025, plus a bonus blunder (because we love those).

Sephora Kids are my spirit animal. My love for beauty also started young. At 11 years old, I would sneak my mom's Olay anti-aging face cream and obsessively stare into the mirror as if I looked long enough, I could see wrinkles form in real time. I was deathly afraid of aging and wanted to preserve every ounce of bouncy collagen I had in that pimpled preteen face.

Something about wanting a full-on facial routine at that age felt sus, but equally necessary. I love to see that young beauty enthusiasts today are not alone like I was and have an entire community, plus countless beauty brand options at Sephora, unlike the one very limited skincare aisle I had at CVS back in the day.

Like many fledgling skincare users, we could all use some direction on the do's and don'ts of a results-driven skincare routine. Yes, you 30-something in the back air frying your leftovers, I got you, too.

Here are the top 5 skincare mistakes Sephora Kids are making, so you don't have to:

1. Applying the product dropper directly to the skin.

This is the number one mistake that we're seeing that gives us the ick! Do NOT for any reason ever apply a skin or hair care dropper directly to skin or scalp. This could potentially introduce debris and bacteria into your skincare products making them less effective, potentially harmful and decreasing their shelf life.

Solulu: Instead, squeeze dropper contents onto cleansed finger tips or hand, and then apply to skin or scalp.

2. Following skincare trends instead of your skin type.

Skincare should be about finding effective products for you. You cannot maintain a routine or vibrant skin if you are constantly changing your products and following the latest skincare trends.

Solulu: Find out your skin type with this easy quiz.

3. Buying and applying way too much product. (This applies to skincare and makeup!)

Give your skin and overconsumption a break. You are beautiful as you are.

Solulu: As a rule of thumb, use a nickel to pea-sized amount of facial products. Use more of your cleanser and smaller quantities of serums or actives. In this case, less is often more. If you are looking for a skincare routine and don't know where to begin, check out our simple 3-Step Facial Routine

4. Sequencing products in the wrong order.

It can get very confusing to know the order in which to apply skincare products. I even had one customer ask where our cleanser goes in their routine. Well, it's maybe not that confusing for everyone, but I digress.

Solulu: Apply skincare products in order of lightest to heaviest product. Of course, begin with your cleanser, followed by toners, essences and waters. These help to rehydrate skin. Go in with serums or ampoules next. If you are using actives, use them only at night and apply after serums, but prior to moisturizers. During the day, apply Vitamin C. (It's right here where heads usually start spinning; stick with me.) Now is the time for moisturizers including creams or facial oils, followed by the last step, a mineral sunscreen. It is very important that you choose a mineral sunscreen if moisturizing with facial oils. At nighttime, skip the Vitamin C and sunscreen (duh), and end your routine with a facial oil, like Nostalgia Super Fruit Face Oil. This should be a whole blog post in itself, amirite?

5. Not reading skincare ingredients.

Ick.

Solulu: Use resources like the EWG (Environmental Working Group) or the Yuka app to easily find out what ingredients or brands are the cleanest and safest. (Keep in mind, indie brands like Live Like You Green It may not yet be on the Yuka app, so opt to check unfamiliar ingredients through EWG.)

Bonus: Aggressively shaking your Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Toner.

I don't know what watermelon ever did to y'all, but if I see one of yous shaking the baby Jesus out of another one of these bottles, it's on sight.

Solulu: Shake gently and treat products with care like you paid for them yourself.

What other beauty trends should we say goodbye to in 2025?

Live Like You Green It,

Danielle

I finally learned what my skin needs about two years ago. I was following skin trends for too long and too many products than I needed. I have a summer vs winter skincare routine nowadays as well. Love the myth busting!
